Lap joint flanges are primarily employed with lap joint stubs, the combined initial cost of the two items being approximately one third higher than that of comparable Welding Neck Flanges. Their pressure holding ability is little, if any, better than that of slip on flanges and the fatigue life of the assembly is only one tenth that of welding neck flanges.
The lap joint flangeis practically identical to a slip-on flange except it has a radius at the intersetion of the bore and flange face. This radius is necessary to have the flange accommodate a lap joint sutb end. Normally, a lap joint flange and the lap joint stub end are matched together in an assembly system. Lap joint flanges with a hub have published specifications that range from 1/2" thru 24". Sizes above 24" are produced as lap joints to slip on dimensions.
